Alan, I would say this to you about touch ID. If somebody really wants in,
it’s easy. Knock you out with a brick, touch your index finger to the touch ID
and their in and your still knocked out on the ground and kiss goodbye your
wallet too! <grin> Could happen what sayith you now? <grin>

Subject: Re: Touch ID & Passcode Confusion

Thanks to all who posted with help with this issue.

After reading your excellent comments, I realize it would not make sense not to
require a touch ID or passcode to restart your phone from a lucked state. It
would hardly be "locked"if this were not required.

Sieghard is exactly right that setting up and using the touch ID works great
and takes very little effort to unlock your phone.

I'm now firmly in the touch ID camp and now my iPhone 6 will be enjoying extra
security.

  Hi Alan,

As Robin pointed out, you can’t use Touch Id for the app store and not for
unlocking your phone. Having said this, once you get the hang of it, unlocking
your phone with touch Id is easier and faster than unlocking it without a
passcode and of course you have the security of having a phone which is locked
down.

In order to unlock the phone without passcode, you have to push the home or
power button to wake up the phone, then put your finger on the screen and find
the unlock button, maybe you have it figured out so you hit it on the first try
or maybe you put the finger on the screen and then use a 3-finger swipe, but
either way you are looking at at least 3 different actions: press the home or
power button, touch the screen and lastly either swipe with 3 fingers or double
tap the unlock button.

If I unlock my phone with touch Id I just press the home button, then I let
go but keep my thumb on the button for about a second and bingo, my phone is
unlocked. It works like a charm and it’s nearly 100% on the first try.

As for using touch Id with the app store, keep in mind that if you reboot
your phone you will have to enter your passcode for the first time when you
unlock, only after that wil you be able to use touch Id. The same applies for
the app store or iTunes store. For the first purchase or download of a free app
after a reboot you will have to enter your Apple Id password, then any
consequent purchase/download can be done with touch Id until the next time you
reboot your phone.

  Regards,

  Sieghard

Subject: Touch ID & Passcode Confusion

I know I'm a bit late to the party on this topic but I just now got an iPhone
with Touch ID. I believe if I want to turn on Touch ID, iOS requires me to also
have a passcode as a backup mechanism. What I really want to use Touch ID for
is when getting new apps to be able to put my finger on the home button and not
have to type in my Apple ID password. What I don't want to have to do is to
type in my passcode or provide my fingerprint whenever my screen locks and I
want to start it again. So far, I've been unable to figure out a setting that
will let me use my Touch ID fingerprint to get apps without also having to
provide either my Touch ID fingerprint or passcode when my phone locks.

Can someone tell me if what I want is possible and the steps to do so if it
is?

  Thanks in advance.
