I will correct my previous response on the Verizon phones in light of this.

It appears that there is a spot on the right side of the 4s from Verizon
where you can use a paper clip to access a microcard. I did not try to
physically open my son's but there is a small hole. On the regular iPhone 4
from Verizon, there is no such hole on either side.

Hank,
Thanks, I didn't know that the phones had sym card slots anyway.
Learn something new every day.

I used to work for a verizon call center I know what type of system they
use.
if memory serves you need a apple removal tool or a paper clip to poke in
the little whole on the side of the phone to remove the sim card tray.
  it uses micro sim.
how ever you will have to make sure it isn't activated with a carier like
verizon crickit, sprint or anyother cdma carier.
once the phone is deactivated from a cdma carier you should be able to use
the sim card part of the phone.
hope this info possibly helps out.
  Hank

        Hi,

Yes – CDMA networks use different authentication scheme. However,
before inserting a SIM, you need to call Verizon to deactivate your phone,
then insert the SIM.

        Cheers,

        Joseph

        Are you sure about that?

My son's iPhone 4s doesn't appear to have a Sim card, since he is on
Verizon.

        Hi,
iPhone 4S can be used with any carrier provided that it is unlocked,
since
it contains radio chips used by AT&T/T-Mobile and Verizon/Sprint.
AT&T
labels HSPA+ network as "4G" and other carriers doesn't. The true 4G
would
be LTE, which the 5 would have it (thanks to LTE chips built on 4G
iPad
III). As for data plan, it depends on what you want to do with your
iPhone
and whether you want to use your phone as a router for others.
        Cheers,
        Joseph

I may not be totally correct on this, but I think that pretty much
any
IPhone you get, no matter the carrier, should be about the same.
This of
course was a bit different with the older devices we are used to,
nokias and
alike, and even some of the newer droid devices to. One thing of
note I've
herd people mention though, are the differences between the data
plans
offered through sprint, verison and at&t. Not sure if any are really
considered truly unlimited, but sprint and verison apparently have
an upper
hand on us at&t users. One other thing that may become an issue with
the
IPhone 5, if it really is 4g compatible, will be how the 4g works
here on
AT&t. I really honestly don't know much about 4g or what they use so
maybe
        it'll work perfectly.
        Take care.
