The iPhone will never replace a dedicated bar code scanner for speed and ease
of finding the bar code.
Depending on how much detail you want, I would start with using an object
identification app like CamFind for free, or Tap Tap See which gives you the
first 20 or so shots free, then you either buy 100 pictures for $7.99 or
subscribe for unlimited at something like $10 per month.

They are faster than any bar code scanning app on the iPhone because you just
take a picture of the front of the can or box and they come back with an ID
fairly quickly, 30 seconds or so on average.

The best bar code scanning app is DigitEyes for $19.99 for the whole package.
But, it can be a bit slow compared to a USB scanner. Plus, to take full
advantage of the iPHone camera, you get the best results by starting wit the
camera very close to the object, then slowly pulling back to anywhere from 4 to
10 inches so the auto focus feature can do its thing. Of course, you need to
know pretty much where the bar code is to have this work in a timely manner.
The advantage to DigitEyes is that if the manufacturer added any details like
contents, package size, calories, you will get all that.

You can read about it in detail at:
www.digit-eyes.com

DigitEyes also works with some Bluetooth bar code scanners, but they are
several hundred dollars.

Subject: Barcode Scanning

Hello:

Currently, I use a barcode scanner that connects to my computer via USB and
uses bcscan.com. I would like my iPhone to take over this job. A few years
back, I tried doing this with several different apps and found the
experience to be severely lacking. Perhaps it was the apps, perhaps it was
the camera. I have an iPhone 6+ which has a significantly better camera.
What would be the go to app for this task? I'd like to be able to identify
canned foods and other items in my kitchen, while I'm cooking, instead of
having to run back and forth to the computer and back.

Thanks in advance,
Robby
