Neal, Have you tried the pre-programmed classical stations? They might have something. Most likely, the trouble is with copyright holders. The large music services pay royalty rates lower than that specified by the government. Further, orchestras likely own the copyrights not record companies so the music services need to do deals with each of the major orchestras.
I noted that Schazam often does not have many of the classic jazz recordings of the mid-20th century in its database. Influential rock artists can also be missing. The new Google Play music service does not have any Al Kooper recordings from the 1960s and 1970s. It seems these services are working so hard to develop their businesses, they don't have the time, focus or energy to broaden their catalog for diverse audiences. Many of us will still be ripping CDs and transferring them to iPhones for the foreseeable future. I enjoyed a Harvey Mandel album from the 1960s on the subway ride home last week. I doubt it is on the big services. Better shovel the rap music that people will forget in a couple of years.
