They are special USB drives which usually have a regular USB plug on one end so 
you can plug it into a computer and on the other side they have a Lightning 
connector to plug into your iPhone.
You can put anything you want on them, music, movies, pictures, documents etc. 
The issue is that for the most part you are limited to using this data inside 
whatever app you have to install to access the drive, e.g. if you put a bunch 
of songs onto one of these USB drives, it is not accessible by the music app.
Think of it like the Dropbox app except that instead of having the files in the 
cloud they are on a little USB drive connected to your phone.
Personally I don't find any use for them, they are quite expensive compared to 
a regular USB drive of the same capacity and you are better off spending that 
money and get the largest iPhone you can next time you buy a new one.
