Added to this, they are, as suggested, dependent on the app to go with them. But there are cheaper ones out there, but those depend on the app of a mainstream model. The main stream producers are wising up to this and locking their app to only work with their own devices. I know this, I was bought one, and it did depend on such a locked app, so device never did anything useful. I have put it away safely, and not seen it since, despite looking for it.

Personally I don't find any use for them, they are quite expensive compared to a regular USB drive of the same capacity and you are better off spending that money and get the largest iPhone you can next time you buy a new one.
