Hi Terrie,
I would probably go to an Apple Store first, if you go to your carrier store you may get good help, but if they have a bunch of young kids there who all are Android fans you may not get as much help as you would at an Apple Store. Also, you may want to consider switching to a mail provider like Outlook.com or gmail. Yes, you can turn on iCloud backup for contacts, but I have been very happy with my @Outlook.com email account and the Outlook.com service in general (what used to be Hotmail). It has come a long way since the old Hotmail days, even the web interface is now very nicely accessible especially with the latest version of Jaws and Exchange Active Sync just works well when it comes to syncing contacts, mail and calendars between devices. If you had all your contacts in your Outlook.com account all you would have to do when you get your new phone is to set up your account and all your contacts and mail would just be there. I know gmail does this as well, but I just never liked the IMAP protocol compared to Exchange Active Sync. I don’t, by the way, hope this will spark another discussion as to what’s better, it’s been discussed many times and everybody has their preference, but all in all I just think using one of these services is superior over using your particular provider’s email especially since if you ever change providers it has no impact on your email and contacts. Good luck getting your contacts back, I guess you can just restore from your iCloud backup when the new phone arrives and see what you get. If it didn’t work I’d take both phones to an Apple Store and see what they can do. I had this happen once and did everything I could think of rebooting the phone and all that stuff. So got to thinking and took off my case which had a screen protector built into it. Somehow just a little bit of moister had got between the screen protector and the screen. Hardly enough to even notice. I took a soft rag and dried it off and rebooted the phone and when it came up the thing work like a charm. Also if it is unlock you can hook it to the computer and iTunes and backup that way as well. Either to the computer or to iCloud. If you have a local Apple store you might take it in there and they might could help you and get things up and running again. Another way is it might be a voice over ting and a visual person might not have any problem and could do it for you. I have the dead phone plugged in and hope it is going to back itself up to iCloud. I think I have done this before and hope that it can find it in its heart to automatically do so now (smile)! I have tried with my bluetooth keyboard, but the phone is locked and doesn't seem willing to connect. I have one more question: if you all had an iPhone 5 with a touch screen that does not accept touch input with or without Voice Over turned on, and if you very much wanted to get your contacts off of said phone, would you go to the store of your carrier (AT&T) or would you go to an Apple Store. I am wondering which store is more likely to have staff and equipment that could pull contacts off of this phone. Thanks again for your thoughts. Terrie who is eagerly awaiting her new iPhone 6 Plus which should arrive today! If Bluetooth is off you might be able to ask SIRI to turn it on, but of course if you never had a Bluetooth keyboard paired with your phone that may not work if you can’t do anything. Also, if you use iCloud backups at least you can plug in your phone and hope that inside a 24 hour window it would at least automatically back up to iCloud. I have ordered a new phone. But I want to get my current contacts off of this dead phone if I can. When I plug the phone into my PC, iTunes asks if I want the iPhone to send material to this computer. I say Yes and iTunes seems to send a message to the phone because it vibrates. then iTunes tells me to respond to the message on my iPhone, which of course I can't do. I foresee an Apple Store trip in my future. However, in the meantime, is there anything I can do to use this broken phone with iTunes? Thanks very much for your thoughts!
