I would never have thought to hide the keypad. You are right, that works. I've written up some instructions that I will send in a new thread for those who are still unclear and want it all in one place, though I'm sure my steps are not exhaustive.

After placing your call, wait until the call is picked up on the other end. You'll now see the standard numeric keypad. If you hit the hide button at the bottom of this screen, you'll see a dial button, which I also think is at the bottom of the screen, and if you hit this, the numbers you entered after the semicolon will be dialled. I realize the article I pointed to used labels like pause and wait that we don't see with VoiceOver, but it also mentions the comma and the semicolon, and I'd given instructions earlier on the list pointing out that the comma will show up where the #4 key is and the semicolon will show up where the #6 key is after hitting the shift key.
