Unless Apple had actually some sort of hold tone or option to play music hold and mute are really the same thing. If you want to put somebody on hold while you do something you don’t want them to hear, you would just tell them that you are putting them on a brief hold, then double tap the mute button and they can’t hear you, however, you can still hear them because all mute does is to mute your microphone.
