Shermeen, yes, you hold down the home and on and off button for about 6 secs. Then check to see if phone is off by using the mute button. If you switch mute on and back off, if the phone is not off there will be a vibration. If it is off, wait for about 1.5 minutes. Since I believe 9.0 the phone will re-boot itself. I have found sometimes it does not. I don't know how much vision you have or even if what I think I see is correct, but when iPhone is coming on it seems to me that the screen is very bright. This may help you if you see light to know when phone is booting up. If the phone doesn't reBoot on its own, do it manually. This may straighten out things with Alex. Hope this helps.
