Thanks for all the suggestions, folks. Sieghard, I took your advice and added Alex to the roder, and somehow that solved the issue, but only because I could change the language using the roder, but still couldn't do it the "old-fashioned way" i.e. by just selecting it like I used to be able to do. Ah well, all's well that ends well though, I guess. I've reverted back to Samantha though, as Alex will always sound better to me on a mac than on an IPhone, despite the high quality speaker. It's as if he takes pauses in awkward places.
