Hi,

I did a bit of checking as to what ports and chips the various versions of
iPhones, iPod Touches and iPads had which is easy to find by Googling it.

Apple stated clearly during their keynote speech that iOS 10 will not be
supported on any devices with a 30-Pin connector and that includes the
following devices:
iPhone 4S with A5 chip, released October 2011 and discontinued October
iPad 2 (second Gen) with A5 chip, released March 2011 and discontinued
partially in March 2012 and completely in March 2014
iPad 3 (third Gen) with A5X chip, released in March of 2012 and discontinued
in October 2012. That was the year Apple release 2 iPads within 7 months with
the iPad 4 getting the A6X chip and Lightning port.

There are also two devices with Lightning connector which are not supported
which was also mentioned in the June 13 keynote:
iPad Mini (first generation) with A5 chip, released in November 2012,
discontinued in June 2015 and replaced with iPad Mini 2 in November 2013
iPod Touch Fifth Generation with A5 chip, released in October of 2012,
discontinued in July 2015 and replaced with iPod Touch Sixth Generation in July
2015

The A5 and a5X chip was the first generation dual core chip Apple used.
The Lightning port was first introduced in the fall of 2012 and the iPhone 5,
iPad Mini, iPad 4 (fourth Generation) were the first set of iOS devices to have
it.
As opposed to the iPod Touch 5, iPad Mini and iPpad 3, the iPhone 5 and iPad 4
already had the A6/A6X chip.
It would therefore appear that all 30-Pin devices are no longer supported bby
iOS 10 as well as those Lightning devices which have the A5/5X chip.

Sieghard

I think it's more the experience Apple wants users to have. Yes, they could
probably disable features the 4S may have problems with like, for example, the
face and object recognition on pictures. They said that iOS does 11 Billion
computations on a single picture and it is all done on device so it's not that
powerful servers in the cloud do the work and just provide the results back to
the device. But I guess if many of the new and advanced features of iOS 10
would be disabled on a 4S there may just not be that much reason to support it.
Considering that the 4S is now 5 years old, I also assume that as a percentage
of iPhones out there not that many of them are 4S phones any more.
Anyhow, I guess Apple has to draw the line somewhere, if they support the 4S
others may say then why not support the 4. I actually think it's amazing they
have supported the 4S for this long, the 4S came with iOS 5 so it was able to
run 4 more versions of iOS after the one it came out with, show me another
mobile phone that had this kind of support. Anyhow, iOS 9 is pretty good and
people who still have a 4S that runs good can still run it with iOS 9 for years
to come I assume although they may have to replace the battery since I doubt
that a 4S that was bought in 2011 still holds a charge for that long. I have a
friend who bought a 3GS in 2009 and he used it until he bought a 5S in 2013, so
for 4 years, and while he of course wanted the newer faster phone, he also said
that he only got a few hours of use out of the phone at that point. A friend
in Germany said her son just bought a fairly inexpensive battery kit which came
with the special screwdriver which iks required to open the iPhone and
instructions and he would able to replace the battery on his iPhone (can't
remember the model) himself, but I would say most people can't or would not do
this.

Sieghard

I'm not sure who does do artificial deprecation of hardware, but I am a bit
disappointed that my 4S may no longer be supported.
I'm not sure if there's something in the 4S that Apple no longer wants to code
support for or if it's because they don't want users to get a less than great
experience on an Apple device. It may also be that they want to save some
money by not taking any support questions on the 4S or by doing any regression
testing on it. I'd be willing to try IOS 10 on it to see how it performced if
Apple would let me though. I'd do this even if Apple told me it hadn't been
tested and wouldn't be supported and I was on my own giving it a try.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I had the run I did on my 4S, but I compare this
to my netbook from 2009 that still running the latest Linux or my laptop from
2011 that's also running the latest Linux but also able to run Windows 10.

Do you know how much longer the iPhone 5s will be supported? I'm considering

Final update? For the iPhone 5? All we know is that the iPhone 4s is due for
its "final update" very soon, 9.3.3, before it will be considered "obsolete".
Can't believe it has survived this far.
iPhone 5, however, will have at least one more year of software support since
iOS 10 will run on it and will be the oldest iPhone to support this upcoming
major release.

Hi Guys, for three or four years, I've been running an email list for

Well, I think for your case, they'd make an exception. You know Matt

BTW, talking about Apple's beta software, even on a beta list, is still
