The problem has been rectified, but, to be honest, I don't know why or how.
The rotor settings
still look the same as they always have: well I think that they always have
looked this way since
the last time I screwed it: that is: both characters and words are marked as
being "selected" but
there is no "selected" within a bull's bellow of containers.
As I said, both words and characters are marked as "selected" on the rotor,
but, before this problem
raised its ugly head, when I flicked across the top of the screen, VO was
reading out the question
and clue letter by letter; however, she is now reading it word by word, which
is just fine being a
lot less time-consuming, but there are occasions when I would like to be able
to switch to
characters just to check.
As both modes, words and characters, are selected on the rotor, is there a
method wherein I can
flick from words to characters and back again?

Go to Settings, General, Accessibility, Voiceover, swipe down to Rotor & tap to
open. swipe down to
Containers. If Containers are selected voiceover will say "Containers selected"
Tap to unselect
Containers.
