I completely get that feeling. However, they make a pretty good case. Good
enough to convince me at any rate. I'm in this for the long haul. I want a
tool which will not suddenly disappear or be left to age ungracefully. Not
so long ago, there were some wonderful audio games which even had famous
voice actors like Sean Bean as narrators. They're gone now because the
developers couldn't make enough profit to keep in business making games.
Papa Sangre and Audio Defence can't be bought anymore and you'd need older
hardware to run them. I never got to win any of those games before they
reached the point where they wouldn't work on new versions of iOS. That's
what can happen when you pay once and everyone else interested has also
paid once.

The subscription model gives them the income they need to keep working on
Ulysses in a more considered way than with other apps. With a one-time
feee, you buy what you get but there's no funds or obligation for the
developer to keep working on it. Also, in order to attract more customers,
you need to make big changes with that in mind rather than the more
considered changes you make when you rely on people sticking with you who
like what you offered at the time you subscribed.

When I've put in tech support requests, I've gotten consistantly reasonable
good responses. They're a small company but they really care about problems
faced by subscribers. I don't think blind people make a huge percentage of
their subscribers but they nevertheless address accessibility issues as
that's possible. Frankly, I'm in this out of pure interest to see how a
steady income changes app development and mind set for these folks. I want
to see how thing develop over the years presuming they manage to last.
They['ve gotten tonds of attention from writers so I think they have a very
good chance of staying the corse and keeping their subscribers happy.

Anyhow, that's why I got on board. It's not perfect. There's a movement lag
when yo first move onto a document with Voiceover. However, writing works
fine but they're going to improve movement of the cursor with VoiceOver as
soon as they can. It's good enough that I'm more than willing to put up
with a few things in order to have the rest. I'll keep an ear on this
threas to see what other people may have found when it comes to writing
apps.
