I only played with an iPhone X at an Apple Store for a while last November and at first I could not get it to unlock. I tried to feel for these vibrations and all that and in the end I realized together with the young lady who was showing me the phone that I was doing the gesture to slow and hesitantly. Once I put my finger on the screen at the bottom and just swiped up it worked perfectly.

YOu don't have to move your finger up one edge. Just start anywhere at the very bottom. You'll hear a pop sound. Then slide your finger straight up until you feel a vibration and hear a louder pop, and lift your finger. Ran the DFU update again with the Apple Accessibility folks. We finally got it restored. I have to say, I hate this phone! I know your supposed to run one finger up the edge to go home but it only works part of the time fore me. Even dad who is sighted misses the home button. He says there are too many gestures.
