I'm not sure what all of these apps are that we're talking about or what 
they use for their map and traffic data, but Google Maps will let you 
know about road closures. I assume Apple Maps does as well.

I'm in Honolulu, and at this point only need a map for Hawaii.

I walk and take the bus, so need the ability to plan and explore
routes in detail. I need the ability to save routes and preview saved
routes before I attempt them.

I need something that can handle turn-by-turn complicated pedestrian
routes because there is major roadwork being done where I live. There
are also no sidewalks in my part of the neighborhood. I'd also like
something that gives accurate feedback re POIs.

I have them all, but I prefer Nearby explorer from APH. For one 
thing, the
maps are downloaded to your device, so you can still use it even if 
you lose
internet connectivity. The screens are configurable, so you can 
display only
the kinds of info that you need.  For a one time payment of $79, I 
think it
is well worth the money, and at least so far, APH has not charged for
updates. Also, there is an Email list where you can get good support 
and APH
staff monitor and participate on the list.
