Well, I always use my mini in portrait mode. Same when I had my old iPad 
original version. And no, the mail doesn’t work like it does on the phone. Your 
landscape mode sounds better, because at least you have the message on the 
right side of the screen I guess, based on my understanding of your 
description. I guess I just like it having a list of messages and then I can do 
what I want in there and if I want to read one, I just double tap. I think it 
reminds me of more how I do mail on the PC. Go through the list, see something 
I want, and press insert down arrow in my case to read the message with 
Thunderbird.
