This sounds like it is no different than any store branded Mastercard with rewards and maybe a few extras. I would agree that the idea not to print the entire card number, expiry date and CV code on the actual card is a good thing. Also sounds like for now this is a US only thing as with so many other Apple services.

If the amount is greater you insert the credit card and enter your PIN just as you would do with a bank/debit card. There is no swiping or signing, you can either tap or you enter your PIN. That is also why once Apple Pay was introduced in Canada and it was supported by the major banks and card processors it was available virtually everywhere as long as the merchant has a contactless terminal. It is very rare that I can't use tap or Apple Pay and it makes no difference whether it's at a large chain like Best Buy or at the privately owned little corner store.
