There are still use cases where POP is a perfectly acceptable mailprotocol, such as when you don't want to leave your mail on someoneelse's server and you're only checking it from a limited number ofdevices. I used POP long after the IMAP snobs looked down their noses atme! * Tongue in cheek *

That being said, if you are accessing your mail from multiple devices oreven multiple email clients from the same device, then it's likely youshould be using IMAP.

You do need to check the settings on both the clients and the server toget everything right if you'll be using POP. Not all servers will havethe same POP options either. Google does like to make things better.

Also, POP is not much older than IMAP, or another way to look at it,IMAP is much older then people think.

Pop or iMap are set at the server, not on the device; so you cannothave pop on one device and iMap on the other.


Using very old systems with new software is bound to run into problems.

Carolyn, as for the sending issue, that sounds like an SMTP settingsissue.

You'll need to check with your Internet Service Provider as to whatthey should be on your iPhone.

    received, which my server says is an Outlook Issue - irrelevant

    You are right, it is a pop account.  Can I change it only on the
    phone?  Because there isn't a way to do so on my computer.  Let
    us just say that I'm running an old system and old software (for
    the moment anyway) and leave it at that.



    But would the type of account really prevent me from selecting
    and deleting messages en mass?

    What you describe sounds like you use the POP protocol which
    should be avoided like the plague. I don’t know your email
    provider, but most nowadays support IMAP and if you set up your
    email account on your iPhone as well as your computer using the
    IMAP protocol you will have no more issues such as you describe
    and in addition you get proper syncing of emails, e.g. if you
    reply to an email on your iPhone the email will show as replied
    to on the computer and the corresponding sent message is in your
    Sent Items folder, if you delete an email on your iPhone it will
    also be deleted on the computer. Essentially with IMAP any
    changes you do are done on the server and any devices whether
    it’s one iPhone and one computer or one iPhone and 5 computers
    get all the changes.

    Good day,

    I am having two problems with my email on the IPhone.



    First, I have the one server and email account.  I mainly use my
    Email on my primary device which is not my IPhone.  I have my
    mail set to delete from the server when it downloads to this
    computer (my primary device), and not to delete from the server
    on the IPhone.



    My problems/questions are, that the phone is downloading mail
     more than once even after the message has gone to my primary
    computer and therefore is no longer on the server.  Is there a
    way to stop this from happening?



    And what makes that problem worse is although I have repeatedly
    checked and followed all the instructions I could find (and tried
    a few variations) I have been unable to delete the entire
    contents of my in-box.  I have "marked" the messages in every way
    possible but nothing I do changes the delete button from dimmed.
     Is there some other background setting I need to change or
    something I can fix so I can mark and delete all these messages
    at once?  It is time consuming and very unpleasant to have to do
    them one at a time, and to have gotten rid of a substantial
    number only to see them all come flooding back is very
    frustrating.  (To be Extremely polite!)



    Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated.
