It just depends. If it's a tri band or quad band phone then you should beable to do it.

Mark, hope I am not making an issue more complicated that it needs to be.If I understand right, at&t uses gsm technology. So, if u get your at&tphone unlocked, will you then only be able to use it with other carriersthat use gsm? You would not be able to use that unlocked at&t phone withgsm technology on Verizon or another carrier who used CDEMA, right?

You will need to submit an unlock request to A T & T at the end of yourcontract as they will not automatically unlock the device.

Speaking from personal experience, A T & T is absolutely wonderful when itcomes to unlocking devices. I have unlocked many, many A T & T phones overthe years and, in most cases, the unlock code is provided within 10 to 30minutes of submitting the unlock request.

When you are ready to unlock you’re a T & T device, you may submit theunlock request using the form located at the following URL:

No kidding. If you can, return the phone and get your money back.

I've bought iPhones on buy/sell mailing lists and eBay and have always hadgood luck. I always make sure that the description states that it's unlockedor have the seller provide me with the IMEI so I can checkcompatibility/status on my carrier. If eBay, I can usually tell by thefeedback and what else the seller has posted if it's an individual seller orit's someone who flips phones. A professional flipper is not going to burnthemselves over one sale, so I'm less concerned about that.Small consolation now I know, but just something to keep in mind for thefuture.

Carriers to my knowledge are legally obligated to unlock a phone if it is nolonger under contract and you should be able to find out which carrier hasto do it.Here in Canada carriers can no longer sell phones locked to them, all phoneshave to be unlocked I think since December 1, 2018. This means of course youstill find locked phones which people sell and which were locked before, butsince then all new phones have to be unlocked.

And, if Verizon can't make it work, I would have doubts that anyone could.At our Verizon store, the guys down there seem to live to do stuff withphones to get them going just right.

When I had Verizon, they had a division of Customer Service for specialproblems, and the guy there helped me and Jim with a phone some years back.

The seller obviously lied, I would never buy a used iPhone online and unseenunless maybe on a list like this where I sort of know the person who isselling it has been around and even then I have heard stories where peoplesell stuff which is not at all as advertised or disappear with the money.Caveat emptor is very much in order here.

I'd call Apple and see if they can tell from the the serial number, whichthey can get if they do a screen share with you.Otherwise you will have to find out what the carrier was, and possibly getthe seller to give their permission to have it unlocked.

Sadly, it could be that the seller simply lied.
But, call Apple Accessibility: 877-204-3930 and see what they can sort out.
