I always make sure that the description states that it's unlocked or have the seller provide me with the IMEI so I can check compatibility/status on my carrier. If eBay, I can usually tell by the feedback and what else the seller has posted if it's an individual seller or it's someone who flips phones. A professional flipper is not going to burn themselves over one sale, so I'm less concerned about that. Small consolation now I know, but just something to keep in mind for the future.
