First of all, when you said you could connect a headset, does that mean you had Voiceover on the headset but not on the external speaker? If so then it was probably simply a matter of the external speaker volume having dropped to 0%, this happens occasionally for no apparent reason and all you have to do is make sure your phone is unlocked and press the volume up button repeatedly until the volume comes back. As for resetting the phone, it is not power button followed by volume buttons but the other way around: 1. Press volume up and let go 2. press volume down and let go 3. Press and hold the power button and count to at least 10, maybe 12 to be safe, but no longer
As for your battery drain, just bring up the app switcher and close all apps, then turn the phone off completely, wait 30 seconds and turn it back on. You can make it easy and simply plug it in after 30 seconds, this will also power up the phone. I know there are lots of people who do not believe that saves battery, but since lowering the brightness is said by Apple, will use less battery, logic would say if the brightness is at 0, that will use the least amount of battery for the screen. And, if you did an update recently, it can take several days before it is done indexing everything. There may be more things, but that is what comes to mind. This morning, I did go into it and turned it off, since I have never used it. If the time comes that I intend to do so, I can always go in and turn it on.
