What happens, with that new slide to type keyboard, when setting up a new
phone from scratch?

I usually set up a new phone, from an iCloud back-up. Which means i will
have to put in my apple ID.

Will a new phone use the slide to type, from the start, or will it only kick
in, after the phone is up and running, as it could prove difficult, because
you can't turn it off, until you can access the settings.

Dave.

Gera,

I did not have a good experience when using the NFC phone to phone setup
when upgrading from an iPhone 7 to an iPhone 8. I got some sort of confusing
response from the new phone that my Apple ID did not match. Since I had only
ever had one Apple ID, I decided at that point to restore from my encrypted
iTunes backup which worked fine after the delay to re-download all the apps
from the cloud. I believe when I get my SE 2020, I'll just restore from a
backup and proceed without the phone to phone transfer.

Exactly what I m wondering too. When I did this method of phone to phone
transfer from a 5S to my currently-running SE, it asked me nevertheless if I
wanted either an Icloud or an ITunes backup. Shouldn t it have transferred
everything from one to another phone (even my music from ITunes) without
having me asked it for which backup I wanted to restore from? What s the
essence then, in usin the phone to phone method?

?Richard and others,

If you have an old phone with IOS 11 on it then setup is even easier,

Once you have vo switched on,
And your sim card in,
You get asked if you have a aphone or ipad that you could hold close
to your new phone, And that close procsimatry will allow the phones to talk to each other and a copy of the data from old to new will be instigated behind the seens.

As far as I know, your instructions Alan are correct.
A couple points though, I would never use something with a sharp point to remove the tray. Just in case. Call me paranoid, but if you slip and push too hard, you could do damage. A standard small paper clip end works great if the sim removal tool is not in the box. Yes, triple tapping the home button when you power it on will start VoiceOver. The one risk in setting up from a backup is that if there are any lingering problems, they will be inherited. I'm debating whether to set it up as a new device, then sync with my computer. The advantage to using an encrypted backup is that more settings like passwords are supposed to be included along with email account details. I may even just call Apple Accessibility and have them help walk me through it.
Though I'm just stubborn enough to go ahead on my own.
But, I would set it up via wifi first, then put in the sim I think.
I'll be calling my carrier to double check.

?Eleanor,

I'll be going through the same steps since I just ordered a new SE 2020 and will be transferring the SIM card from my iPhone 8 to my new SE. I've never transferred a SIM before but I'll do my best to answer some of your questions.

My understanding is that when you power on your new iPhone, you should be able to press the home button three times to activate Voiceover. But see below for other steps you need to do before this.

I would strongly recommend that you backup your iPhone 8 before doing anything else with your new iPhone. Whether it's better to do this over the air or to a local computer has changed over the past few years in my opinion. In the past, more things were backed up to a local encrypted iTunes backup than to iCloud but I'm not sure that is still the case. Since your Mac is not available, you should definitely do an iCloud backup before setting up your new SE. To do so:

1. From your iPhone 8, open Settings, and at the top of the list, double tap on your name, Apple ID, iCloud, iTunes and App Store.

2. Swipe to iCloud and double tap.

3. Under the heading Apps using iCloud, swipe to iCloud backup and double tap.

4. Make sure iCloud backup is turned on which will be the first in the list on the screen that opens. Swipe again to the Backup now button and double tap to initiate a current iCloud backup. Give the process a few minutes to complete and you will be given the current time of the latest backup when it's done.

I will be following the above steps as well but will also do an encrypted iTunes backup on my Windows 7 computer because I really don't believe you can have too many backups.

I've never transferred a SIM card myself because my previous new iPhones came with SIM cards. However, since I've switched to a Verizon prepaid plan recently, my SE 2020 will not have a SIM card. In portrait mode with your iPhone 8's power button near the top right edge, the SIM release hole will be in the very middle of that right edge below the power button. You will need a SIM card removal tool or a push pin or an unfolded paper clip to have something to insert slowly into the SIM removal hole in order to release its tray. I personally think a push pin like I used to use on a cork bulletin board works the best because it is easier to hold onto and apply any needed pressure. If you have such a thing, I would recommend doing the SIM removal over a tray with raised edges to provide something to catch the SIM to be removed should it decide to leap out. This is really all the practical advice I can give since I've never replaced a SIM myself. My understanding is that they only go in one way and I believe one of their corners may be notched to provide for this one way only insertion but I expect others will be able to offer much more detailed advice.

Since I only set up new iPhones every couple of years, I don't remember exactly what Voiceover will say when setting up your new SE but I believe it offers you the choice of setting it up as a new device or from restoring a backup. I always restore from a backup. Also, I'm not sure when the best time is for you to transfer your SIM from your iPhone 8 to your new SE. My cautionary side tells me to do this after the new phone is set up so you'll have a device that works until you're ready to make the new one a workable cell phone. I would think all your apps and settings should download from the cloud just fine and the new SE would work like a WiFi only device until you transfer the SIM to it but others more experienced than I will have to comment on this.

I hope the above will be somewhat helpful. Finally, my apologies to you, the list, and the Turtles but I just have to close by saying Eleanor, gee I think you're swell. I'm a fan of 60's music.

scratch - all help appreciated

Hi all

After any advice/help from people on this list with this situation. I?ve ordered a new IPhone SE, and have just had confirmation of its despatch. So have some questions re setting it up which I?m hoping people might be able to assist with.

Firstly, I know this sounds somewhat daft, but if anyone could e-mail me some idiot-proof instructions on how to set it up from scratch, including on how to get Voiceover started from the word go I?d be really grateful please?. I?m far more nervous about doing it than normal, probably because I know all the shops are closed, and sighted friends who would normally be able to assist me can?t do so at the moment due to the lockdown. So any step-by-step guide much appreciated.

Secondly, is it better to set the phone up over the air?, or is it better to set it up through my Mac? I ask this because my Mac is currently away being fixed/serviced. So I just wondered whether it would make any difference which way I did it?, and if so whether I should wait for my Mac to return before attempting set-up?

Finally, can anyone send me some step-by-step idiots instructions on how to swap my SIM card over from my currrent IPhone 8 to the new SE?? I?ve never done this before, and again, in normal times I?d happily get sighted help with this, but obviously I can?t do that right now. So any help appreciated.

My apologies for all the questions, but I really don?t want to make a mess of this/muck it up completely/ruin the new phone/etc. So many thanks in advance for any help/advice that anyone can give me.

Eleanor
