Dear Sieghard, I've just found out that my tv is indeed capable of taking an HDMI connection. Wonderful.
I just need to find out what else I can do with Apple tv, for instance, whether I can stream foreign tv channels available on the internet via my Apple tv. Thanks again. You have saved me a lot of money.
