Yes, but I do both—use the sign and talk with people. Sometimes folks just pat my dog while saying, “I know I’m not supposed to pat a service dog but I just can’t help myself.” With the sign, it happens less, especially in front of other people who have often pointed out the sign. Rightly or wrongly, one of the things I like about being a guide dog owner is that I feel the attention tends to go to the dog rather than me.
