When this happened with me last night with the NBA app, the screen appeared completely blank when I was exploring it with VoiceOver, but my sighted wife said everything looked completely normal to her. In other words, the screen wasn’t blank to a sighted user, and voiceOver’s screen curtain wasn’t turned on. It’s true that I couldn’t turn off screen recognition while I was in the NBA app but I could do it when in the App Switcher, as Donna has pointed out. This is what got this app working for me again, so I could listen to the Bucks and then the Jazz.
