As it happens, screen recognition was in fact on. I don’t have it in my rotor, as I tend not to use it and I found myself accidentally turning it on when I didn’t want to. But at some point I must have turned it on for that app. Unfortunately, I turned it off in settings under voiceover recognition, unloaded the app, reloaded the app, and nothing changed. Describe images is off and screen recognition is off, and the screen shows me zippo. Very weird.
