Even though you turned off Screen recognition, did you double check under the VoiceOver Recognition, Screen Recognition, Apply to Apps, that it isn't selected for the L.A. Times?

But if I load it with voiceover off, it works. On the 7+, it just works. Don’t have to unload voiceover first.
