you don't need the reader. You should be able to scan with your phone. it uses NFC and not bluetooth, so you will need to place the phone next to the sensor on your arm. When you first install or when you change the sensor, you will have to wait an hour before you do your first scan.

I’ve used Seeing AI to read the screen with limited success but just tried VD Scanner and it was perfect. I still would like to be able to scan with my phone instead of the reader.
