What you want to achieve is the sort of movement that you have if you turn the knob on the radio so imagine that you want to turn on a radio, not one of the switch sliders but one of those that the volume knob turns around, with your thumb and finger on one hand. if you can't actually turn your thumb and finger and get it to work, try putting your thumb and finger in the position that you think they should be, then gently turn your other hand with a wrist movement as you hold the phone in it and see if that works for you. this also achieves the same thing.
