Hello,

A couple of things to try:
* Try holding it at arms-length away from your face, straight out in front
of you.
* If you are wearing glasses, try with them off.
* If you did not register face ID that way, try registering it again.
* Try using a microfiber cloth to wipe off the screen. Sometimes, skin oils
can cause interference, if you hold the phone up to your ear while on a
call.
* Note that, on device reboot, you will certainly need to enter your pin
again.

If none of these things help, I would probably go back to where you bought
it, or reach out to Apple, as it may be a hardware issue.
