It is undeniably difficult finding employment if you are blind, but it is
[possible, you just have to keep trying, keep trying and hope that one day it
is the right job and the right person interviewing you.

When I was first employed as a braille shorthand typist, initially no one in
the office was giving me work and in those weeks I wrote nearly a dozen short
stories so I looked busy.

There was a flu epidemic and the reps then had no choice but to use me, and
there came a time when the head estimator would only give work to me and when I
left, I left as secretary to the Transport Director. I am now retired, but I
have been really lucky in that one job led to another to another.

My advice would be to just keep trying and even accept something you don’t like
the sound of, as once you have a job and have something to put on your C.V. it
does become much easier to find the job you want.

Subject: Re: working at amazon

Wow! The same thing happened to me way back in the 1960s when I was trying to
get a job straight out of college. I was told that I would be a fall risk.
Then, when I visited the unemployment office, someone suggested that I start my
own transcription business, which I did, and I was able to hire a few employees
to help me out. My main field was medical transcription, but I also did
dictation from a couple of factories in the area. I had written to them,
figuring that perhaps I couldn't get work as a medical transcriptionist. Then,
I was able to get work from several other hospitals throughout the state of CT,
and I had to hire people to help me do the non-medical work. My business went
well for several years, and then hospitals started getting their own medical
transcriptionists, so one day, my Dad was reading the paper and he saw that a
local hospital was looking for medical transcriptionists immediately, so
without hesitation, I applied for a job. I had to take a test before I was
hired, and luckily, I was able to work there for 30 years. I retired back in
2004 and I am enjoying my retirement immensely!

Amazon in America does have at least one blind person that I read an article
about. Don't know about other countries. Also it may depend on what position
you are applying for. The person I read about works in a position where he is
making their products more accessible to people with all kinds of disabilities.
So they are willing to employ a blind person in that type of job but I don't
know how they feel about their other positions. Sometimes I have seen
companies who are willing to employ blind people in something like an
accessibility related job but it doesn't always extend to their other jobs and
sometimes the discrimination is really subtle and difficult to prove. But I
know I have gone through much rejection by employers and did eventually get
jobs but sometimes you have to experience a lot of rejection before you land a
job. It can be very difficult and discouraging. I know someone that lost a
job and went for seven years without getting another and with going through
tons of sending out resumes and applying for jobs and this person was very
educated and capable and had worked successfully as a blind person and after
seven years he did find a job where he is happy and happens to also be making
quite a bit of money. Obviously it doesn't work to that degree for everyone.
I don't make the kind of money he does and I'm only working very part-time. So
every case will be different. I hope though that you will keep trying to find
a job and if you want to work at amazon I'd say go for it and see what happens.
You might get more rejection but you'll never know if you don't try and even
if they have rejected people in the past there might be a new person working
there now that does things ddifferently. It's very tempting to give up. I
have had times when I did. But I hope you will be able to have the strength to
keep trying.

Hi,

Does Amazon employ blind people?

I saw a job in Israel, and applied, but I had a negative past with so many
companies, according to my blindness, so, I don’t know…

Many companies just rejected me because of my disability.

Thanks much,

Afik
