Sieghard,

For a cell phone carrier to have a relationship with Apple, such as
selling their phones and having their frequencies supported by
iPhones, the carrier is obligated to sell a certain amount of Apple
hardware devices. Apple does not want cash from these companies but
product sales so services can be sold to device owners. If cell phone
companies are not meeting their quota, then they deeply discount
phones to maintain their relationship with Apple. Remember, criminals
will kill a victim to have an iPhone to sell.

The iPhone 13 would be called a 12S in a previous era. Apple had
little ability to innovate with employees working from home and the
world shut down for Covid. This is why Apple increased the based
storage of the lineup so it would be more attractive to consumers. I
loved this change and bought a 512 GB iPhone 13 Mini. Many consumers
are realizing they can get the same performance on the 13 lineup as
they can with the regular 14. Apple wants to blow these phones out
their sales channel, leaving only 14’s. the big surprise this year
was the popularity of the 14 Pros. People were willing to pay a lot
more for the advanced features. The camera on the 14 Pro now blows
Samsung Galaxy out of the water for the first time in many years. I
believe interest in Pro models will accelerate next year when Apple
offers super-fast transfer speeds on the Pro while keeping the regular
phones at USB 2.0, which was the technology of a decade ago. further,
the four and three nanometer chips will enable advanced functionality
not yet revealed while these chips will take a year or two for the
regular models.

Half of the value of iPhones is iOS. Developers stop supporting iOS
versions about a year after Apple stops supporting them. Buying the
latest model means someone will have the longest number of iOS updates
possible, extending the useful like of the iPhone. In 2022, iOS
updates ended for the iPhone 6s and 7 series, released in 2015 and
2016 respectively. This meant that Apple supported these devices for
seven and six years from their release, the longest in the cell phone
industry. True though significant depreciation occurs the first year
after the initial release so last year’s models can be a good value
while offering many years of iOS updates. If people allow companies
to compete for their business and are willing to switch carriers, then
they can get good deals on a new phone. This is added savings that
lowers the price to make the latest model affordable. For some people,
only certain networks are optimally available in their area so they
can’t switch.
