Hi Kelly, Crash detection is definitely a neat feature which I am sure is and will be saving lives in certain cases. As for satellite communication this is not a big deal for me since I sell both Garmin Inreach as well as Zoleo satellite communication devices and my store has a Zoleo Satellite Communicator demo device which we can let people who are trying to decide whether to buy one use and we (my employees and me) can use it any time we want. Both Inreach and Zoleo work on the Iridium satellite network which works much better in the North, that guy in Alaska was lucky a message got out, I have customers who are in the very far North of BC (just below the 60th parallel) and they had Spot devices which use the Globalstar satellites as well and it was always flaky and unreliable. The other advantage with Inreach and Zoleo is that you can not just send a short text message and communicate with the emergency response centre, but depending on your plan you can just send regular text messages to any mobile number you want. Yes, it does of course cost money and Zoleo's unlimited plan, for example, is $70 Canadian a month, but for companies this is a price well worth paying in order to be in touch with their employees and in many cases it replaces a satellite telephone which costs much more. Zoleo also allows you to send a single message with up to 950 characters if it goes to somebody who is also using the Zoleo app. In order to use a Zoleo you simply download and install the app from the App Store or Google Play Store, connect your Zoleo device via Bluetooth and then you can put it in your backpack or your car and forget about it. I know Apple said they did major magic to allow satellite connectivity without a big antenna, but you have to stand in a place with a clear view to the sky and even point your phone towars a satellite which apparently it shows you how to do, but neither Zoleo nor Inreach devices have antennas sticking out, they are all small devices and they work in your car or inside your backpack, you just pull out your phone and if it was connected via Bluetooth you open the app and text away. There are times when texts can take a short time to go through, but often you can have a text conversation with somebody just as if you were texting via SMS or iMessage. With Zoleo you also get an actual phone number which doesn't change and you can select an email address, e.g. [email protected], and you can give that number or email to anybody and they can send you messages that way. Only thing is that if people text you to your number the texts are 160 characters in length and incoming messages also count against your plan. In Canada a Zoleo device costs $269 and a few times a year they go on promo for $199 so for many people who spend a lot of time outdoors up here where we live and where cell coverage often ends 5 or 10 minutes off the major highways these are important devices. Garmin has a new Inreach Messenger which works similarly to a Zoleo which means also that should you happen to have cell coverage or Wi-Fi you can stilkl communicate using the app, but it will send via cellular or Wi-Fi if available. Garmin has also full-featured GPS devices with Inreach functionality and in the case of the Montana 700I or 750I this is a touchscreen device which you don't even need a smartphone to use because it has an onscreen keyboard just like any smartphone. All the other devices also have an "OK" and an "SOS" physical button so if you are actually hurt and need to send an SOS it's as simple as pushing that button. The OK button sends a preprogrammed message which doesn't count against your plan which let's people you specify know that your are OK, maybe you are on a multi-day hike and you set it up to say "Arrived in camp, all is good". Lastly you can also set up all of these devices to send automatic location breadcrumbs at specified intervals like every 5 or 10 minutes and people you give access can then see on a map exactly where you are. As for functionality and features any of these blow Apple's satellite SOS and connectivity out of the water and I understand that what Apple is offering is only free for now and eventually it will also cost money if you want to use it. I assume they will also add features, but for now if you want a serious and robust satellite communication link then your iPhone 14/14 Plus or 14 Pro/Pro Max is not it. Oh, and I forgot that battery life on Zoleo and Inreach is also much better, we all know that an iPhone is done after a day or so and these devices last for days and have low energy modes where they can last for much longer.
-----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> On Behalf Of Kelly Pierce Sent: Friday, December 23, 2022 1:12 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Mark and iPhone 14 Pro Max, Together at Last Apple does not give carriers deals. Carriers must accept shipments of iPhones according to the terms of their contract and carriers have to find ways to blow them out of their sales channel. Carriers are eating the discounts to retain customers and gain new business. I converted the currency and checked prices on Swappa for the iPhone 13. You are getting new iPhone 13 Pros for what used 256 GB iPhone 13’s are selling for on Swappa when the total price is calculated after two years if you were to buy the phones outright. Besides the camera, the other big improvements this year in the 14 were crash detection and satellite communication for emergency rescue. Already it has saved lives, including a man in Alaska who crashed his snowmobile in the middle of the night. He was able to connect to satellites even though he was further north than the supposed upper boundary limit for Global star satellites. The other involved two twenty somethings who drove their car off a ridge near Los Angeles. The car plunged 70 feet before crashing at the bottom of the valley. The crash detection activated and because there was no cell service at the bottom of the valley, the crash data was sent to the Apple emergency communications center who dispatched a rescue team. Some find this feature remarkable and feel the price of the 14 upgrade is worth it. For me, it would be nice but not essential for my digital lifestyle, given I live in a big city with loads of cell coverage for hundreds of miles around.
