I am not sure what exactly the relationship between carriers and Apple
requires, but I am sure Apple is not giving away iPhones to carriers dirt cheap
just so they can sell lots of devices. If a carrier offers a good deal on an
older model then I am sure they at least still break even, after all, I doubt
carriers make the majority of their revenue on selling hardware, they do so on
the monthly payment they get for the plan users have and if in the process of
selling a user a new device they can entice said user to opt into a plan which
offers 5G and more data for an extra $10/months and that plan is now in place
for 2 years then the carrier just made an extra $240.
I have a retail business myself and there is a cost to inventory you have
sitting around; ideally everything should constantly turn over but of course
that is not the case so therefore retailers put stuff on sale. I just had a
customer ask me for a particular type of reloading bullets (for making
ammunition) and when I looked it up I noticed we had 2 boxes, but the price
seemed very low especially considering how expensive especially ammunition has
become in the last 2 years. In many cases my cost is we had them for almost 7
years, apparently not a very popular caliber and bullet for reloading. Normally
most items go on sale if they haven't sold after 6 to 8 month with a few
exceptions when items don't change and they might be more niche products
customer may expect us to have but maybe they are not necessarily something we
sell more than once a year. Of course with electronics this is yet again
different because often there will be new models once a year which is why the
big retailers like Best Buy and so on have such frequent and aggressive sales.

Apparently my frustration with Telus will end somewhat well, the lady I spoke
with on Tuesday did indeed get back to me and said they were able to find one
more 13 Pro 256 Gb in Silver and I told her that would be fine, I wasn't very
particular about the colour. I won't have the phone for Christmas, but most
likely my wife will prefer the Sierra Blue so I'll give her that phone as my
Christmas present along with the Belkin 3-in-1 MagSafe charging dock and I'll
have to wait a few more day s for my
iPhone 13 Pro to arrive. The fact is that we are only paying $455 Canadian over
2 years for this phone which Telus lists for $1,583.00 as the full price. That
is a few bucks high since currently an iPhone 14 Pro 256 Gb at Apple costs
$1,549 Canadian, but still, if I were to pay monthly Apple shows the price as
$64.54 over 2 years. We are paying $18.96 a months for the iPhone 13 Pro 256 Gb
and if we want to keep it at the end we would have to buy it out for $390 which
if I break that up over 2 years would be another $16.25 a months, so in total
the phone would cost us $845 or $35.21 a months. I expect I will get $400
Canadian for my iPhone 11 and I should get $550 or $500 for my wife's iPhone 11
Pro so together this will cover the total of what we have to pay over the 2
years. When this time is up in December of 2024 we can either pay the $390 to
buy out the phone or give them back to Telus and get new phones for whatever
deal is being offered at the time. I expect I'll buy them out and then sell
them since I assume we will get more than $390 if we sell them in 2 years, but
I'll see what the market is like and then decide. One thing I do know is that
most likely we will upgrade again in 2 years, but again most likely not to the
latest iPhone 16 which will be out at that time, but most likely we'll then buy
an iPhone 15 Pro which by then will be a year old and once should get a decent
deal just as we did now for last year's iPhone 13 Pro and also 2 years ago we
got very good deals on our iPhone 11 and 11 Pro which at that point was also
last year's model. With phones being as advanced as they are now it would need
a really significant jump with the iPhone 16 for me to want to buy it.

Sieghard,

For a cell phone carrier to have a relationship with Apple, such as selling
their phones and having their frequencies supported by iPhones, the carrier is
obligated to sell a certain amount of Apple hardware devices. Apple does not
want cash from these companies but product sales so services can be sold to
device owners. If cell phone companies are not meeting their quota, then they
deeply discount phones to maintain their relationship with Apple. Remember,
criminals will kill a victim to have an iPhone to sell.

The iPhone 13 would be called a 12S in a previous era. Apple had little
ability to innovate with employees working from home and the world shut down
for Covid. This is why Apple increased the based storage of the lineup so it
would be more attractive to consumers. I loved this change and bought a 512 GB
iPhone 13 Mini. Many consumers are realizing they can get the same performance
on the 13 lineup as they can with the regular 14. Apple wants to blow these
phones out their sales channel, leaving only 14’s. the big surprise this year
was the popularity of the 14 Pros. People were willing to pay a lot more for
the advanced features. The camera on the 14 Pro now blows Samsung Galaxy out of
the water for the first time in many years. I believe interest in Pro models
will accelerate next year when Apple offers super-fast transfer speeds on the
Pro while keeping the regular phones at USB 2.0, which was the technology of a
decade ago. further, the four and three nanometer chips will enable advanced
functionality not yet revealed while these chips will take a year or two for
the regular models.

Half of the value of iPhones is iOS. Developers stop supporting iOS versions
about a year after Apple stops supporting them. Buying the latest model means
someone will have the longest number of iOS updates possible, extending the
useful like of the iPhone. In 2022, iOS updates ended for the iPhone 6s and 7
series, released in 2015 and
2016 respectively. This meant that Apple supported these devices for seven and
six years from their release, the longest in the cell phone industry. True
though significant depreciation occurs the first year after the initial release
so last year’s models can be a good value while offering many years of iOS
updates. If people allow companies to compete for their business and are
willing to switch carriers, then they can get good deals on a new phone. This
is added savings that lowers the price to make the latest model affordable. For
some people, only certain networks are optimally available in their area so
they can’t switch.
