Ring only would tell me that there is motion at the front door, unlike Nest it does not recognize the difference between a person and an animal, our Ring stickup camera in the backyard often says “there is a person in the back yard” when it’s my yellow lab walking by. Nest doorbell cameras will say that a package was dropped off, but I have a Nest doorbell camera at my business and sometimes it says this and in fact it’s just somebody walking by so it’s not always accurate. The other thing with Nest is that you can indentify people by name from the history although you would of course need sighted help initially and then after that it will identify that person by name. But once again, keep in mind that this is often less than reliable. One of my employees is very regularly identified as another employee who worked for me for a while and was from Australia and she has been back down under for more than a year now. In the same way the same employee is sometimes identified as the “Canada Post lady” or my other employee’s wife Ashley. I find good thing with both Ring and Nest, but both also have their drawbacks and I don’t necessarily find it easier to answer one over the other. One good thing is that with a Nest Doorbell camera you can set up any Nest or Google Mini smart speaker as the “doorbell” so to speak, e.g. if you set it up correctly then as soon as somebody pushes the doorbell button, any speaker you set up as part of that group will say “Somebody is at your back door” (or whatever you call the door). With our Ring doorbell at home our Echo Show in the living room does this and maybe an Echo Dot can be set up to announce a doorbell press, but if so I haven’t found where to do this.

Having said this, if you have a traditional doorbell right now chances are it would be a relatively simple thing to get a wired Ring doorbell hooked up. The app is fine but has a few issues, one is that if you switch to live view Voiceover speech moves to the Earpiece, makes it difficult to deal with and a situation where using a headset comes in handy. It also definitely takes practice if you want to be able to answer a doorbell press quickly enough so the persojn at your door hasn’t walked away. I always thought it must be an Apple limitation which doesn’t allow you to answer a Ring notification like a phone call evben from the lock screen where as soon as you tap on the notification it connects you to your doorbell.
