Richard, some of these LiDAR features are very cool, but sadly things like the virtual tape measure are impossible for a blind person to use or at least to do so with any accuracy. Also, keep in mind that you don’t need an iPhone 16 Pro for these features, even an iPhone 12 Pro or 13 Pro can do all these things and the only differentiation would be if there are AI features which also rely on the LiDAR sensor, then those I assume would be specific to the iPhone 15 Pro or 16 Pro. I just last night asked Jonathan if he had already received his iPhone 16 Pro and I believe he has, here is his reply to my question about LiDAR and iPhone 16 Pro in general:
Furniture has been added to the Lidar functions, but you can get that in earlier models, it’s not iPhone 16 specific. I am also very disappointed in that despite claims of a better microphone system in the 16 pro, I honestly hear no difference. The speakers are a little better though, and we’ll have to see what difference the faster chip makes with AI. Battery life is a big win. So as others already said, battery life is apparently really good although when he says “it’s a big win” I assume he is comparing it to his previous phone which I believe was an iPhone 15 Pro. Of course battery life is always a big upgrade if you had a phone for 2 or 3 or even more years. If I bought an iPhone 15 Pro now it would also have much better battery than my 2-year old iPhone 13 Pro. LIDAR, which you spelled correctly, has one feature that is clearly intended to help visually impaired and it will take the app developers to really leverage it in more ways. Some are trying to, like Seeing AI’s World channel that tries to identify objects and tell you how far away they are, etc. Here is a list I grabbed from Copilot, number 3 is Door Detection that is really useful in unfamiliar buildings. 1. Sharper Photos: LiDAR helps the camera capture sharper photos, especially in low-light conditions. So, your nighttime shots will look even better! 🌙📸 2. Augmented Reality (AR): LiDAR enables AR experiences by blending the real world with virtual elements. Here are a few cool applications: - Virtual Tape Measure: Imagine measuring furniture or room dimensions by just pointing your phone—LiDAR makes it possible. - 3D Model Scanning: You can scan objects and create 3D models right from your phone. - AR Gaming: LiDAR enhances AR games, immersing you in interactive virtual worlds. 🎮🌟 3. Door Detection: Exclusive to the iPhone 16 Pro, LiDAR maps and identifies doors. It provides text descriptions of doors, including distance, open/closed status, swing direction, and more. Handy, right? * Copilot said that was exclusive to the 16 pro, that is not correct, that works with any pro model that has LIDAR. I’m hoping that more things will be added to some of the accessibility apps in iOS 18.1, but LIDAR itself is no reason yet to buy a particular phone. Keep checking in a few months when developers have time to work with the new iOS features. Richard, USA "INTROVERTS UNITE ... I’m one who only upgrades my phone when I can’t do things I want to do. For this reason last March my wife and I turned in our iPhone 6S phones for iPhone 15S. Over recent months I have used access apps like Seeing AI BeMyAI etc. I have heard that accessibility apps for the blind will be greatly enhanced or only work if the phone has Lidar. I know that’s probably not the correct spelling. Anyway, when I got my 15S last March I thought the guy at the AT&T store told me it had Lidar. I have since discovered that it doesn’t. My question is what will Lidar do for me that I can’t do without it? I am seriously thinking of upgrading to a 16 Pro in a few months if Lidar is really that important. Can someone give me a description of what I would get if I had Lidar? Thanks.
