I also struggled with face ID for quite a while. As has been pointed out by others on this list, the phone must be about a foot away from your face. If you aren’t sure how one foot feels, have someone move your hand to the right place while you are holding the phone. As silly as this may sound, I also found it helpful to eliminate as many variables as possible. I chose one chair and sat there to practice. It helped me somehow with the placement of my arm. For a couple of weeks I even used that chair whenever I needed to use face ID. Now it doesn’t matter where I amp; I get it right about 80% of the time if not, only a small change is necessary and I get it the second 6ime around. HTH
