By default the app takes the first 40 seconds of a song. You can play that 40 second portion of the song and, if you don't like it, approximately figure out how many seconds into the song you want to start. If, for example, you think you want to start 6 seconds into the song, just change the start position to 6 seconds, the duration will still be 40 seconds so when you play your selection it will play from 6 seconds to 46 seconds. Then you may decide that you have to nudge the start position a bit more ahead or back to make it sound good and you can do that because each tap on the > or < symbol only moves the position by one tenth of a second. Once you have it where you want it you can do the same to the end position. If the song fades out in the middle of a word and you want to make it a couple of seconds shorter you can just move the end position back, in my example instead of from 6 to 46 seconds you may want to go from 7 to 44 seconds which will result in a ringtone that is 37 seconds long instead of the full 40 seconds you can have. Once you play around with it it's really quite easy to do, it does require a lot of taps if you want to move the position by 8 or 10 seconds as you have to tap the < or > symbol ten times for each second, but if you split tap it's pretty quick and it's way more precise than using a slider.
