So you can send it to his Gmail account, it doesn't bounce, but he doesn't see it on his iPhone?
You could go to his account through the web interface, and see if you see it there or not. The mobile web interface for Gmail is pretty clean. You could also install the Gmail app, not necessarily to use it, but just to see if the mail gets through to that app. This will tell you if the problem is on his phone or at the Gmail server. I suspect the problem is on the phone though. You might try removing the account and adding it from scratch. As Shane says, if you select Gmail, you shouldn't have to give it much information, and it should just work. The invalid credentials makes me think his password is incorrect on the phone or maybe one of the security settings is set incorrectly.
