Using IMAP, how do you look at accidently deleted e-mail. I don't see a
deleted folder.

You are correct. With IMAP, everything stays on the server. With POP
however, this is configurable. You can have your client download the
messages from the server and either delete them from the server or leave
them on the server. If you choose to leave them on the server then the
next time you check your email from another device, you'll see all the
same messages. Obviously, if you delete them from the server then you
won't see them at all from any other device. There's also an option to
leave the messages on the server unless you delete them from your client
or move them to a local folder. When I used POP, I would use this
setting on all of my devices except my main home PC, where I would have
the messages downloaded to my PC and deleted from my server. I've
switched to using IMAP now though.

Hi Kris, If I understand correctly imap keeps the email on the server and
so
all changes take place on the server wile pop3 is set up so that email
downloads to your device.

Is there a preference for having the Gmail account set to IMAP as opposed
to
pop free? I have often wondered why people prefer one or the other, but
don't know what the differences are.
Thank you.

You don't need the Gmail app from Google, although you can certainly
use that if you want to.
I found the web site
http://email.about.com/od/iphonemail/qt/et_gmail_iphone.htm which has
all the information, including step by step instructions, for setting
up Gmail with your native iPhone email client for IMAP, POP and
Exchange.
