Christopher, thanks for this info; sounds like imap is the way to go here. He's not planning to send out lots of mail, just a few messages to a few people. However, if imap makes the mose sense, then we'll stick with that.

How much mail will he keep around? If he'll mostly just be reading and
deleting things on one system then I'd normally just recommend POP. If
he'll end up with quite a lot of mail out there though then I'd stick
with IMAP. It also seems strange to me to be recommending POP for
someone to use on a phone, so either way, I'd just go with IMAP. If he
changes phones in a few years, he won't have to worry about transferring
his email, it'll just be stored on the IMAP server.

Will he be using iTunes at all to sync with his phone and back it up? If
not, again, I'd suggest IMAP.

I'm not an Exchange user, but if he doesn't need it for business then
I'm not sure how much sense it makes. I'll let an exchange user weigh in
on that.

How will you be using your mail? Will you be checking it from multiple
devices? Will you be deleting mail and moving it into different folders
on these different devices? Do you mind having your mail stored in
remotely?

I don't use Exchange myself, but if you'll be working with your email
from multiple devices, I'd recommend IMAP. I'm sure you can also Google
for suggestions on when to use POP, IMAP or Exchange.

Thank you for this; I was away and did not see it. How do I decide if I
should use pop, imap, or exchange?

You don't need the Gmail app from Google, although you can certainly use
that if you want to.

I found the web site
http://email.about.com/od/iphonemail/qt/et_gmail_iphone.htm which has
all the information, including step by step instructions, for setting up
Gmail with your native iPhone email client for IMAP, POP and Exchange.
