Hi,

It's also worth pointing out that the most widely spoken about piece
of "Malware" (Incorrect term used by the media in this situation) that
you can be hit with after you've jailbroken relates to people who have
installed a ssh server and not changed the password.
Trust me when I say that you won't install a SSH server by accident.
In the same way that you won't ever open the app store, search for an
app, find it and then install it, all by accident. There have been
(And probably always will be) people that will install openSSH without
really knowing what it is; perhaps without even reading the
description of it in Cydia. In the nicest way possible, for these
people, a bit of real world education in the form of datatheft is
probably the only way they will learn to stop and think before they do
something. It's true that the stop and think mentality isn't as much
of an issue if you're not jailbroken, but it's a good attitude to
adopt full stop and not just when you're using your smartphone.

The people that argue that jailbreak apps can steel your data are
correct, but again, this is extremely unlikely to happen when using
the default repositories in Cydia. It's also important to remember
that Apple don't have access to the source code of any of the apps
they approve so its entirely possible (But unlikely) that the exact
thing could happen when you install an Apple approved app. Long time
subscribers will be aware of the amount of tethering apps that have
been approved because they've been diskised as something more mundain
like a flashlight - if Apple had access to the source code and
inspected it, this would not happen.
Getting back to the jailbreak apps issue, you're far more likely to
experience security related problems if you add other repositories to
Cydia which there usually isn't any need to do and again, you won't
ever do it inadvertently. For me this really isn't a problem, as it
fairly closely mirrors life in general. If you walk through a rough
area at night, you're far more likely to run into problems. If you buy
food from a restaurant that seems shady, guess what, it's probably not
going to be that great and there could even be repercussions in the
future.
You don't (Or shouldn't imo) restrict your lifes activities to those
that your parents have approved for you (Age permitting) and generally
speaking, you will excersise good judgement before you make any
decissions throughout your life, so personally, I really see no reason
why things should be different when you use an iPhone.

I've never said that jailbreaking is for everyone and I never will.
The problem that new users often run into is that they're served a lot
of speculation by some people (Not targeting you here sieghard) on
this list who really have no experience or even worse knolige of
jailbreaking, so the questioner receives missinformation.

Just some food for thought; others will doubtless disagree.

Cheers,
Ben.
