Barry and all:

I have just installed Dijit and purchased the Griffin Technology Beacon, $40.95 at Best Buy. All appears to be accessible, with Dijit behaving as described. Unhappily my Dish 722 box is having issues accepting IR commands but I was able to change channels on my TV via the app and the Beacon.

It is my experience using a variety of technology that generally speaking, boxes which use 3 digit entry sequences are much more problematic for automated devices such as these.

The virtual remote control which is also available from the DIJIT interface appears to be accessible, and is made easier to use by confidence tones which accompany every button press. An additional plus is that both blind and sighted members of the household can use the same Beacon with different iOS devices.

Best to all,

Brad Hodges

Essentially you could program the device but VoiceOver did not recognize the
Power on or off Macros. Nor some buttons.

This has changed with the last update. I can now power on and off the devices.
I haven't spent much time working with it as I am dealing with other family
health issues right now so I haven't given it much attention. . VoiceOver does
speak the generic buttons as far as I have gone with it to date. I would not
want to suggest that someone purchase the Griffin Bluetooth Remote unless they
are willing to really put it through it's paces and return it if it doesn't
work.

Those of you who use the Dijit software will know that they have revamped their
web site.

One thing I particularly like about using the remote is that you can review the
Channels and if there is a program you wish to watch double tap it and dijit
will cause the Griffin Remote to switch to that channel

You can set different profiles for each room and macros to sequentially turn on
or off your devices. You can also have it learn a variety of remotes.

I do plan to spend some time working with it as it would be particularly useful
for our surround sound system but having started working on this already I know
that it will take some time and I have more important priorities right now.
Everyone have a great day.

Hi,

I have the RE Remote 30-PIN IR dongle, but never use it. At one point about
2 years ago I was beta testing for the developer and he made a few
improvements, but I just find it's much too much trouble to plug this in,
open the app and then use the iPhone to maybe change volume or channels etc.
It's not as if you have full access to on-screen menus of TV's or receivers.

If anybody wants to buy it, I'd sell it for $25 + whatever shipping would
be. It's pretty small, it comes in a little padded pouch and could be
shipped in a padded envelope. If anybody is interested email me directly at

There is a product called "RE remote." It plugs in to the bottom of
the phone and can control a variety of devices. It cost around $40-$45 from
amazon.com. There was a podcast on applevis about it. It does require some
sighted assistance, however, it is overall accessible. I should explain
sighted assistance is needed in the beginning.

Subject: Is there an accessible TV remote app for the iPhone

Hi, I thought I read about an accessible TV remote some place, but I can't
find it. Well, I can find them, but I don't know if they are accessible.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks much.
