hi Keith,
Things that are a little thicker are no problem, but this will all be a
matter of degree. I have just spent a little time playing with various CD
covers and found that when the writing, on the back, is black on white, I get a
reasonable OCR, but it is prone to a little flack (Siri won't give me the
original spelling of that word!) because the lights shine on the surface of the
plastic. This is just a fact of life! However, when the writing was, say, white
on black, or, and this is very common, the writing is superimposed on a
pattern, then both Prizmo and Text Grabber could not give me a result. Text
Grabber did do it sometimes, but the result wasn't very clear. So, CDs boxes
could be problematical, possibly, one of the few times when not using the light
but only ambient light might be in order.
Re food boxes/tins etc, some of the same issues may apply because it is
often the case that manufacturers like to pep up their visuals with colours,
but, in general, you will be able to get something, but here's the thing, if
you use a BarCode app, it is much easier to find the code using the StandScan
Pro, and, with, say, RedLaser, you don't even need the lights as this app is
very good at using its' own. I had great success by rolling, slowly, a can of
peas across the base of the box. So, something to play with.
Finally, I have only experimanted with Prizmo, and so don't know if my new
love Text Grabber is as good, but with prizmo you can get good double page
shots from paper backs, however, this is more difficult because it involves
holding the pages flat and this can be problematical, especially, toward the
front or back of the book, half way through is usually a doddle! When people
get using their StandScans and get more adventurous, those of us who have tips
to share will do so, i am sure, as to how to gety the best results with
scanning from books.
HTH, Sandy.
