Correct. Not only that, but Microsoft Exchange is no longer supported
for new devices (i.e. if you've used Gmail via Exchange on your device
before, you can keep doing so but you can't set up new devices to use
it). So for all practical purposes, there's no Exchange support
anymore.

So for synchronization of contacts, CardDav is really the only option.
