I'm not so sure on this.  I just recently moved to a IPhone 5, and my phone is 
sending and receiving my mail just fine.  We have an exchange server set up 
here at home.  I didn't set it up myself, but in checking with my hubby, he did 
it the usual way.  I would think Apple would lose a lot of business because of 
so many workplaces that are using the IPhone.

Correct. Not only that, but Microsoft Exchange is no longer supported for new 
devices (i.e. if you've used Gmail via Exchange on your device before, you can 
keep doing so but you can't set up new devices to use it). So for all practical 
purposes, there's no Exchange support anymore.

So for synchronization of contacts, CardDav is really the only option.
