Hi,
Totally agree with this. I used to have the KNFB Reader and though I could
read the menu I much prefer the interaction with others discussing it.
I have to say the number of places doing Braille menu's, particularly chain
restaurants is increasing which is nice!
Louise.

Hello all
sorry to be slightly ot but I have been to restaurants and the staff are
more than happy to read out the menus to not only me but any blind friends I
take with me. They will read it out to all of us and wait patiently for us
to decide what we're having. Some restaurants we have been to even have
Braille menus but don't hold your breath as they are few and far between.
Just my £0.02 worth and being back on topic I certainly wouldn't use Prizmo
or any Ocr solution even if they claim they can do so.

Hi Krister,
Theoretically maybe one could read a menu with it, but I think it
would be inefficient at best and painful at worst. If I am by myself
meaning not in the company of a sighted person, I much prefer the
interaction with a waiter or waitress to find out what is on the menu.
I think I'd feel somewhat awkward standing up and hovering over the
table trying to take pictures of the menu to see if I can get some
readable text out of it. In many cases the results are probably bad
enough so I end up asking anyways. In any case, what's wrong with a
bit of human interaction? I at least don't feel it threatens my
independence or ability to live my life.
I feel the same about shopping. I often shop on my way home from work
which means after sometimes a 10 or 12 hour work day. At that point
the last thing I want to do is work my way through the isles with my
iPhone in hand using apps like Digit-Eyes, Talking Goggles or whatever
to find what I want. So I call my local Safeway, I have a little small
talk with Scott, Bob, Erin or any of the other people who answer and
whom I know, then I tell them I'd like to pick up a few things. I tell
them what it is because a lot of times it's easier for them to get the
stuff if they have some notice rather than having to find somebody to
shop with me if I show up when it happens to be busy, and when I get
there an hour or so later all I have to do is pay, load my pack and go
home.
Regards,
Sieghard

Hi,
For me, who never got good results with Prizmo, at least not in the
beginning, the voice feedback is a god send. It's very, very
sensitive, and i haven't gotten any usefl results out of it, but that
may depend on many factors, however i love the voice feedback feature.
With this feature, we truely have a portable ocr solution. Standscan
may be good, but it is in fact a bit limiting, i mean how many of us
take the standscan to a restaurant and try to read the menu? Now with
this new voice feedback in Prizmo we can at least theoretically do just
this.

Hi Fellow OCr Fans!
Like many of us, I downloaded Prizmo 2 yesterday and have played
with
it a little. primarily, I have questions about it and, perhaps, some
of you have the answers?
1. We do seem to have lost the option to give voice commands to
take
picture. Am I wrong?
2. Prizmo now gives feed-back as to the positioning of the phone when
scanning. Now, if you use a StandScan Pro, this is irrelevant, it
works anyway! But, free-hand, how helpful do people find this? perhaps
because I have got quite proficient at using this app free-hand, I
actually find these suggestions off-putting, but that might just be
me, old dogs and new tricks etc. However, after a few attempts at
using this new functionality, I find I am told "no page visible"
immediately followed by "ready to shoot" or something of the sort. I
am wondering, is Prizmo now working in the same way as the KNFB
device/software? I like the idea, but am not sure how useful in real terms
it is.
3. If scanning free-hand, I perfer to use both hands to hold the
phone, I
get much better results this way, however, without the speak command,
I find I have to try and double tap while holding the position, which,
I think, may be a definite downside to the new update.
4. It does seem that, especially when using P2 with the StandScan
Pro,
the OCR is better and faster, however, it does seem that we must now
consider the page size options for best results with the SSP. Prizmo
seems to be set to A4, by default, but the base of the StandScan Pro
is actually larger, It might be American Letter size, not sure, but I
found that I did better positioning my document centrally, in the long
axis, it is OK to abut along the back of the box, in order not to lose
some of the text in the scan.
5. I am delighted to see that we can now add pages to previous
scans,
but, thus far, I am finding it to be a rather complex method. Perhaps,
it is just me, has anyone found a method to do this in just one step?
Finally, I would still prefer Text Grabber for my everyday tasks.
The
interface is so simple, the OCR equally as good and the speed, comparable.
However, Prizmo 2 does offer us some interesting options, perhaps it
will be most useful for "Power OCR users" I think it a baluable
upgrade, but miss the voice command feature. Only hoping that someone
will tell me where to find it...
Good wishes, Sandy.
