I have nothing but bad memories of books on records. Not only was there a lot of flipping and switching but the worst part was all the damage done to the platter by previous users. Pops, click and worst of all track jumping. Cassettes were much better. Besides all that, they had the advantage of size and that your place was held if you paused one title and started another.
Sound quality was good enough for voice recordings.
Digital has been a vast leap forward.
I love my Streams and we'll see what develops with the apps for the two smartphone OSes.

Chuck, the sad thing is, I can remember when Talking books came on a 12 inch record and they played at 33 and a third RPMs and was ticked off when they went to 10 inch records at 16 RPMs and then all that new-fangled cassettes thing on 2 tracks. That wasn't good enough though for them, They then had to go from 2 track to 4 tracks and then they went a step farther and cut playback speed in half. They said quality wouldn't suffer but they were wrong. It did. The best thing to happen to talking books was they went digital. Sound quality went up greatly if you were listening to a new recording but then trouble struck again with budget cuts. Far fewer new books were being recorded and they started emptying out the tape libraries and digitizing those along with some restorazations of older books on record. Still, the best sounding recordings come from new books being recording for the first time.

Hi Joe,
While I am looking forward to the IOS app, there is something about using the talking book machine supplied by NLS that is comforting. I like the physical buttons and the sturdy feel of the machine. Perhaps it is just a throwback to when I first started using talking books on cassette... Which was a big deal back then.

I have to agree with you here. I have an iPhone 4 and even a Nano 5 and yet I still take my Victor Reader Stream with me. The 1 thing I do like about the new Stream is it's ability to be recharged via a USB connector this saving the need for yet one more recharger in the bag. Still, it would be nice to have a talking book handy for those times when your sitting around with your thumb up your nose waiting for something or some one! <grin>

I'm an iPhone user, and I still use a Victor Stream to listen to NLS books.
I prefer the convenience of tactile buttons to navigate, quickly stop/start,
and change formats. It's going to take me a long time to get used to a touch
screen to do things you can easily accomplish with a keypad.--Joe

Hi Christopher and John,

Many on this list who take full advantage of all the wonderful features and
capabilities of the iPhone forget that there are still a lot of people out
there who are blind or visually impaired and who either don't want or don't
need a smartphone which comes with half a mortgage in the form of an
expensive monthly plan.

For me the Stream or Booksense both of which I owned at one point also don't
have any attraction anymore and instead of spending $300 or $350 or whatever
these devices cost nowadays on one of these I'd much rather buy an iPod
Touch or iPad Mini as a companion device for my iPhone. But, as I said, a
lot of blind people are perfectly happy with a Stream or Booksense and I
would imagine it will be quite a while yet before such specialty devices
become obsolete. Oh, maybe a Stream or Booksense doesn't have much to do
with an iPhone, but I think it's OK to discuss them in the context of
services like NLS and I guess if Raul or Cara don't agree they will let us
know.

Regards,
Sieghard
