Truthfully, I played with this a while, and it has to do with the length of time you hold it in. I think trial and error, if not too frustrating, may work out. I, in fact, do get it to access Siri, and it's way convenient.
Holding it in too long makes it look to want to pear, too little doesn't do it either. Once I got it I've been pretty successful and it's nice having the phone in a different room than you are when it's necessary.
